2002 Pax Syrah, Obsidian, Knight’s Valley
There is very little topsoil and walking across this Chateauneuf-du-pape look-alike commonly evokes a twisted ankle or two. One beautiful distinction to this site is the baseball sized chunks of Obsidian glass that sparkle amongst the rocks, evidence of the well documented volcanic activity which occurred here two million years ago. The wine from this vineyard shimmers as black as Obsidian. The purity of fruit is so intense that you can taste the 25 year-old struggle these vines have had with the rocks and the decomposing sandstone base. This is without a doubt the most fun to drink of any wine we have produced to date.
