2006 Pax Syrah, Kobler Family Vineyard, Russian River Valley

A very wet spring made hanging any Viognier late into the season impossible. A decision was made to pull the Viognier a week and a half before the Syrah, press the grapes for juice and reserve the skins for a co-fermentation once the Syrah was harvested. Unfortunately the Viognier skins didn't freeze completely in one of the boxes and we were only able to utilize enough Viognier to equal 3% for the co-ferment with the 2007 Kobler, which has typically seen as much as a 10% Viognier as a co-fermentation. The result is a darker more brooding Kobler, the exotic aroma remains but the wine is richer and darker in character, but still walking the line on old-world ripeness levels.
97 % Syrah / 3% Viognier
30 % new French Oak
13.5 % Alc by Vol
3.79 pH
525 cases produced

Tasting Note:
Roast Beef, savory blue fruit (salted ligonberries?)bacon fat, creamy blackberries, smoke, game and herbs on the succulent and hard to forget aromas. The mouth is rich and full (the fullest Kobler yet) with a real saline, smoky, gamey unmistakable Syrah character. This is not a fruit bomb…it barely shows any fruit at all actually. The texture is so creamy and supple, it is hard to believe how together this wine is right now. The richest and most concentrated Kobler we have made, it almost doesn't taste like what we have come to expect from this site. This 2006 has all of the elegance, but man is it rich.
